“Flexion is for Fools, Yo!”

A very sage exclamation by chiropractic students across the county and world.

I know, I know, I know.  Flexion is a natural range of motion; but, it is also at the root of most instability and vulnerability so we must always fight against it.

Not only is flexion an issue, but so to is its trusty side-kick, INTERNAL ROTATION.   Put them together and what do you get – the Fetal Position; the position of maximum vulnerability.

Flexion + Internal Rotation = Fetal Position = Maximum Vulnerability

So what can we do? The Lat Stretch.

The latissimus dorsi muscle is a powerful adductor and internal rotator of the shoulder.  Known as the “swimmer’s muscle” it is amazing in its force production and stabilizing effects of the scapula (shoulder blade).  When tightened down, it is weak in force production and stabilization and devastating in postural compensation (HUNCH BACK).
