When the front of the hip hurts like you’ve been stabed by a knife that has recently been removed from a raging inferno, the tendency is to stretch that area.
Unfortunately, this leads to a poor result and the beginning of a downward spiral of frustration and dread. Every stair and every vehicle entry and exit becomes a seemingly life or death situation.
Although somewhat counter-intuative, mobilizing the posterior hip soft tissues and capsule can recalibrate a good hip dynamic and reduce stress, inflammation, and pain at the front of the hip.
It also helps create an awesome bottom part of the squat.
